MSSU to hold third annual Business Gateway competition

Missouri Southern’s Plaster School of Business will host the third annual Business Gateway–a free business competition and workshop event for area high-school students–on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Missouri Southern State University.

 
With the success of the previous year, the Plaster School of Business is excited to continue to grow this event.

 

“We’re excited to hold Business Gateway again this year,” said Dr. Lucas Dille, assistant professor of accounting and coordinator of the Business Gateway. “Over 630 students from 32 schools will participate in the event. Our goal is to bring developmental and recruitment aspects as well as the competition. We want to introduce students to what the Plaster School of Business has to offer and give them a taste of what Missouri Southern is about.”

 
A variety of competitive events and presentations will run from 9 a.m. to noon in MSSU’s Plaster Hall, followed by an awards ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in Taylor Performing Arts Center. Workshops include video podcasting sessions and virtual production in filmmaking and advertising hosted by the communications department as well as food experiments presented by the kinesiology department. Participants may also partake in a tour of the communications department.

The competition will include individual and team-based events in categories such as social media, accounting, data analytics, tourism, business communication, and more.

This free event for the area high schools is fully funded by the generous support of the following organizations: Ozark Center; People's Bank of Seneca; Forvis Mazars; Southwest Missouri Bank; Commerce Bank; Land Development Group; Leggett & Platt; Schreiber; and the Trent Family.

St. Louis Avenue in Joplin to close at 7th Street

On Monday, November 4, St. Louis Avenue will be closed from 7th Street to Campbell Parkway. Emery Sapp & Sons, contractors for Missouri American Water, will replace the water main under St. Louis Avenue, weather permitting. Detours will be in place.

This closure lasts approximately one week, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Then, the contractor will pause the work to test the new line for about one week. 

The closure will resume for another week to allow service line tie-ins to be completed. Work completion is based on weather permitting.

Drivers will have access to area businesses throughout the closure. Please use caution while driving near this work zone. The City appreciates your patience as the improvements are made.

Duenweg woman injured in crash on Kodiak Road

A Duenweg woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:09 a.m. today on Kodiak Road a quarter of a mile west of Neosho.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Kolela J. Pascalvie, 21, Duenweg, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a tree and a fence.

Pascalvie was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

14-year-old Joplin pedestrian struck, injured by car

A Joplin teen was injured in a car-pedestrian accident 7:55 p.m. Thursday on W. 20th Street one mile west of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 14-year-old Joplin boy jumped in front of a 2009 Lincoln Town Car driven by Linn A. Rowe, 78, Joplin.

The boy was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

Seneca pedestrian struck by car, killed in Granby

A Seneca woman was killed in a car-pedestrian accident 7:32 p.m. Thursday on Highway B in Granby.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 GMC Sierra driven by Jeb S. Hann, 60, Granby, struck Vidalia M. Boyer, 20, Seneca, who was on the edge of the roadway.

Newton County Coroner Dale Owen pronounced Boyer dead at the scene at 8:41 p.m.

A 3-year-old Seneca boy who was with Boyer was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Joplin.

The fatality was the 94th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
