The City of Granby is seeking a highly motivated City Administrator. As City Administrator you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the city, overseeing city staff and ensuring all city services are provided efficiently and effectively under the general policy and framework established by the Mayor and City Council.

The ideal applicant must have the ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others; oversee all city financials including the ability to create a budget and ensure that all departments operate within the approved budget; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrative officials, and the public; and exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting departmental policies and procedures. 

A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related discipline, or at least seven years of responsible administration of a governmental unit or professional managerial work experience is ideal. Any Former experience as a City Administrator/Manager, Assistant City Administrator/Manager or Department Head is highly desired.

This position requires that you pass a drug screening test and possess a valid Missouri Driver’s License. Position open until filled. Pay depends on experience. Excellent benefits package including dental, vision and LAGERS pension plan, and stipend. Pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Thanksgiving traffic stop leads to arrest of Parsons man on drug charges

On November 23, 2023 at approximately 11:00 a.m., Off. Frank Pousher, Cpl. Christian Smith and K9 Morgan were on patrol. They observed a 2010 Nissan Altima commit a traffic violation by failing to signal, in the area of 15th and Clark Ave. There they conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle. The driver and only occupant was found to be Damian Lajarwin-Gerre Williams, 33 years old of Parsons.

 
During the stop, K9 Morgan was deployed by Cpl. Smith and conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Morgan gave a positive alert to the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, amounts of marijuana and paraphernalia were located, as well as more than 25 pills marked as controlled substance Oxycodone, which Williams was in unlawful possession of.

 
Williams was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance with the intent to distribute, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and a traffic infraction of failure to signal. 

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, an affidavit was sent to a judge for review, a bond was set for $5,000 cash or surety. Williams was subsequently transferred to the Labette County Jail, where he later bonded.

The pills are being sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for analysis and identification, due to, in recent years, the nation has been plagued by counterfeit prescription pills that contain Fentanyl or other controlled substances. These pills are commonly referred to as “Dirty 30s’ and have caused fatal overdoses.

11/21/2023 While investigating suspicious activity, officer arrested a subject and transported subject to the Barton County Jail and booked for 4th degree assault special victim. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were seized and will be sent to be tested.

11/22/2023 Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Lexington for a domestic disturbance in progress. Drug paraphernalia was seized and for consideration of charges will be sent to be tested.

11/24/2023 Officer was dispatched to the 1200 block of Poplar in reference to a stolen wagon. Another wagon was left in place of the stolen wagon. Investigation continues.

11/25/2023 Officer received a report of a subject acting irrationally in the 700 block of W. 8th and was gone from the scene. A short time later, officer received report of this subject intentionally striking a car, with his vehicle at 9th & Oak, then fleeing the scene. At the same time, another officer observed the suspect’s vehicle at 13th & Broadway. Suspect was arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Office and is being charged with Assault Domestic 1st degree, Assault – police officer, DWI/alcohol and Endanger Welfare Child.

11/26/2023 Officer conducted a traffic stop at 10th & Maple St. Subject was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and issued a Driving While Intoxicated citation.

Arkansas man injured in collision at Carthage city limits

An Ozark, Arkansas man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 11:15 a.m. today on I-49 at the Carthage city limits.

According to the Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred when a 2018 Ford F650 UHaul driven by Harry E. Platte, 61, Omaha, Nebraska, merged into the lane and collided with a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by Jason W. Crouch, 48, Ozark.

Crouch was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Carthage.

Author Colm Toibin to preview new novel on Newsmakers

An author with roots in Ireland shares his inspirations for writing his successful fiction novels and previews a new novel on this week’s Newsmakers.

Colm Tóibín (pronounced “cuh-lem toe-bean”) is a novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, critic, poet, and playwright. Tóibín was born in the small Irish town of Enniscorthy. He is the Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. 

His writing includes implementation of significant themes including Irish society, personal identity, the tradition of Catholicism, and the general strength of people, and especially women, in the world.

Tóibín, the author of Brooklyn, the story of a young Irish immigrant in Brooklyn in the 1950s, visited Missouri Southern State University for a book signing and lecture. Many classes and a book club at MSSU read Brooklyn during the fall of 2023 as part of the Ireland themed semester. He is currently publishing a second book, titled Long Island involving the same characters, that takes place decades later.

Colm Tóibín started his career as a poet and found success with his fiction writing. He has spent time not only in Ireland, but also in Spain and the United States.
