MSSU athletes to help Children's Haven move to new location

(From Southern News Service)

Following the annual MLK Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 20, at Missouri Southern State University, a group of student athletes will offer their time to help a local organization make a big transition.
About 50 student athletes and coaches will gather at 9:30 a.m. at Children’s Haven, 701 S. Picher Ave., to help the shelter – which temporarily houses children and teens in times of family crisis – move into a new, larger home that has been built next door.
The 14,202-square-foot house will double the organization’s amount of space as well as the number of children that can be served – from 12 to 24 at a time. It includes a family visiting room, intake office, a wellness room, a nursery and a separate living room for teens. The basement includes a safe room that doubles as an activity area for kids.
“Children’s Haven’s new house has been made possible by support from the community,” said Stephanie Theis, executive director. “For Missouri Southern to be here to help us move further shows this community’s commitment to make what we do possible.”
Kelly Wilson, director of Advising, Counseling & Testing Services at Missouri Southern, is coordinating the service project and says it fits perfectly with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which has become a national day of service.
“It’s known as a day on, not a day off,” said Wilson.

During a tour of the newly opened Fire Station #4, Mayor Colbert-Kean presented a Proclamation to Richard Serino, Deputy Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognizing his work for the community’s recovery following the 2011 disaster.
Serino arrived in Joplin on the morning of May 23, 2011, just hours following the tornado. During his deployment in Joplin, he not only led FEMA operations, but also provided his expertise and counsel to City officials and community leaders as they began the immediate work to help our citizens.
“The City of Joplin truly appreciates Rich’s commitment and work immediately following the disaster that expedited the federal response to our area,” said Mayor Kean. “And he has continued to support us to ensure that the resources from the federal level matched the needs identified.”
In addition to this work, Serino hosted a nationwide Think Tank session from the Missouri Southern State University campus in to engage emergency managers across the country in discussions about disaster recovery and in particular, Joplin’s progress. This April 2012 event brought national attention and visibility to Joplin, allowing others to learn about the combined efforts of City officials, community leaders and citizens that were crucial in keeping the recovery process moving forward.
Serino has announced his retirement and will leave his post of FEMA Deputy Administrator on January 23, 2014, making this his last official visit to our community.
“Again, we thank Rich for all of his work and wish him well in future endeavors,” said Kean.

Amy Jones fails to show for hearing; warrant issued for her arrest

The first five times you fail to show for hearings in Judge Richard Copeland's courtroom, you get a pass.

No one messes with Judge Copeland a sixth time.

Copeland issued a warrant for Joplin businesswoman Amy Lynn Jones and set bond at $3,000 when she failed to show for a hearing this morning.

The hearing was for a felony bad check charge. She also is facing two felony forgery charges.

Mrs. Jones was owner of Dream Makers, a wedding and event planning business.
