Newton County sheriff warns of scam artists preying on elderly

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

There is a scam going on in the area where a male subject will call the elderly and pretend to be the grandchild of the person. They may be doing Facebook research to learn what the grandchild calls the grandparent ( pa pa, grand pa ). They then will say that they have been arrested in Florida or Las Vegas.

The grandchild will tell the grandparent to not call his dad and the grandparent is the only one that can know. They often tell the grandparents to call the attorney in the area They are often given a couple of numbers (778-816-0023 or 756-395-2425) however they change numbers all the time.

The attorney will then ask for the grandparent to go and get gift cards from Wal-Mart or Target. They will then ask the grandparent to read the numbers off of the gift card so they can begin to transfer the money to different cards. Please pass this on to the elderly who might not have Facebook.
