Employees at Jasper businesses help police recover stolen phone, identify suspects

(From the Jasper Police Department)

On March 17th, 2021, it was reported to the Jasper Police Department that a phone had been stolen from an employee at a local business in Jasper.

After it was reported, steps were put into place of trying to locate the phone. Jasper officers and employees of the business set out on a search to locate the phone. After about 1 1/2 hours of searching, the phone was located in a field in Carthage.

It appeared the suspects attempted to sell the phone, but after an unsuccessful attempt and knowing the phone’s GPS “find me” system was activated, they dumped the phone.

After investigation, it was determined the suspects were at another local business earlier in the day where an employee there had actually reported the vehicle and subjects in the vehicle as being suspicious. The Jasper officer was not able to get to that business before the vehicle had left. They left and went to another business where they stole the employee's phone.

We believe we have at least one of the suspects identified now after investigation and charges will be sought for felony stealing. The other suspect we are confident will be identified.

This is an awesome example of what citizens and a police department can do when a very positive relationship is established and trust is built. The fact the employee at the first business recognized the suspects were “up to no good” and thought well enough to get the vehicle’s license plate and then immediately report it to the police should be acknowledged. Great work by this person!

The suspects are not from this area and simply didn’t know that Jasper citizens don’t mess around when you come into their town and commit crimes.

Even though we located the phone, that does not relieve the suspects from facing felony stealing charges.

We will update the case once the investigation is complete.

Great work by the employees of both businesses by springing into action once it was determined something wasn’t right.
