Suicide risk and prevention for students topic for Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

Finals and finances can be serious stressors on college students which put some individuals at risk of suicide. The holiday season can also be a difficult time for survivors of suicide. Both topics along with prevention strategies are the focus of the upcoming Newsmakers program.

Jacque Christmas who worked with the Missouri Department of Mental Health for 28 years and a survivor of suicide herself discusses her efforts with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The charity offers support groups and trainings in recognizing the signs of suicide. AFSP holds an awareness walk every October.

Missouri Southern State University student and Green Bandana Project president Emma Hobbs talks about the organization that trains students, faculty and staff to be a sounding board for students, and how to recognize and discuss suicide concerns and resources for help. Jannette Eldred, MSSU Social Work Program director discusses prevention strategies for those at risk for suicide.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning December 21 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.
