Southern Theatre will present “No Suicide in Springtime” – written by written by Alejandro Casona and translated by Lia Beeson – at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Bud Walton Theatre at Missouri Southern State University.
Directed by Jim Lile, Southern Theatre’s offering for the Spain Semester has been called a “surreal romance.” It takes place at a very special resort, a home for suicides … where no one has ever died. How can coming to a place designed to facilitate the end of your life help you to discover the value of your life? In his book on modern Spanish theater, Michael Benedikt said the “work of Casona is shot through with a gentle, wistful feeling for the improbable and the imaginative; however, it is a feeling which is also characterized by a particularly calculated and deliberate relation to reality.”
Admission is free for MSSU students, faculty and staff; $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens; and $3 for non-MSSU students. The production is for mature audiences only.

MSSU art, biology departments team for plein air painting activity

The Art Department will team with the Department of Biology and Environmental Health for a plein air painting experience from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, on the prairie preserve at Missouri Southern State University.
The students in Kyle McKenzie’s beginning painting class will work on oil paintings in the prairie setting while Dr. Teresa Boman discusses the ecosystem and history of the prairie.
“My classes have painted in different locations around campus,” said McKenzie, an assistant professor of art. “This is the first time we’ve used the prairie. We have this cool resource across the street, and it will be good for students to learn about it.”
Fourteen acres of the native tall grass prairie have been set aside for Missouri Southern students to use as a natural laboratory. Home to a unique assemblage of specially adapted grasses, Mima mounds and flowering plants, the prairie also provides a wide array of animal, insect and bird species for students to observe and research.
“Our hope in the Biology Department has been that the prairie could be used by other departments on campus,” said Boman, assistant professor of biology. “Kyle contacted me in April if they’d be able to do a collaboration with them.
“I’ll be talking about the historical and scientific aspects of the prairie and the art students will be painting it. We’ve also invited any of our biology students who are interested to also attend.”
Boman said a communitywide painting event on the prairie is being planned for the spring semester.

There will be intermittent lane closures on St Louis Street between Broadway and Zora starting on Monday, October 5 at 7:00 a.m. through October 7 at 6:00 p.m. The lane closures will be due to construction work being done in the area.
The street will have areas of lane closures in both the north and south bound lanes. Drivers may experience a short delay. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in this area.

MSSU announces Spirit of Philanthropy award recipients

The Spirit of Philanthropy awards were announced during the Missouri Southern Foundation’s annual Lantern Society Dinner, held Sept. 26 at the Hallbrook Stables Guest House and Grounds.
More than 140 university donors and guests gathered for the event, which recognized them for their support of Missouri Southern State University.
The Spirit of Philanthropy individual award was given to John O. (Pat) and Carolyn Phelps, of Carthage, while the business award went to Roper Automotive Group of Joplin.
The Phelps family have a long history of support for the university. Carolyn’s father, George Beimdiek, was also a major benefactor – providing funds for the student recreation center that opened in 2009.
Pat and Carolyn have donated funds for scholarships, supported the athletics program, the International Piano Competition and more. They helped fund the naming of the Julio S. Le὚n Health Sciences Center. For their generosity, the Interdisciplinary Simulation Lab in that building was named in their honor. Phelps Theatre, located on the first floor of Billingsly Student Center, is also named for them.
In addition to their financial support, Pat and Carolyn each served on the Board of Regents (now the Board of Governors), while Carolyn also served on the Missouri Southern Foundation board.
Roper Automotive Group was honored for their longtime generosity to the university.
Starting with Gil Roper, a former Board of Regents member, and his wife, Wilma, the family has supported Missouri Southern since its early years. Roper Automotive, under the leadership of their son, Hal Roper, has provided support for Missouri Southern’s Athletics Department for many years – providing cars to be used by members of the coaching staff as they recruit and host potential student-athletes and their families.
They also donated the scoreboard for Warren Turner Field as well as promotional materials and prizes for game sponsorships.
“The support given to Missouri Southern through the efforts of the Phelps and Roper families embodies what the Spirit of Philanthropy awards are all about,” said Dr. Brad Hodson, the university’s executive vice president. “We want to commend them for their giving spirit, which has helped to enhance our students’ academic and athletic experience and will continue to do so for many years to come.”
