Kansas City teen taken to Freeman after near drowning in Capps Creek

A Kansas City man was taken to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, following a near drowning incident 1:45 p.m. Friday on Capps Creek, 100 yards east of Walleye Road.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Lu Lay, 19, Kansas City, was attempting to wade across the creek, was overcome and was pulled underwater.

Bystanders pulled Lay to shore and a Newton County ambulance took him to Freeman to be treated for serious injuries.

Frederick A. Spittler, 36, Kissee Mills, misdemeanor Stone County warrant for driving while suspended

Motorcyclist killed in Range Line collision

On April 2nd, 2021 officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to a crash in the 2800 block of south Range Line Road. The crash involved a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle.

The passenger vehicle had one occupant and there were no additional passengers on the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital but later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was also transported to a local hospital and was in critical condition. At this time, names are being withheld pending formal notifications of next-of-kin.

The Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team responded and is currently conducting an investigation for the crash. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
