Joplin city offices closed for Labor Day, trash pickup times changed

In recognition of the Labor Day holiday, the City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, September 2. This closing includes the Joplin Recycling Center and MAPS services. 

 The Recycling Center will also be closed on Saturday, August 31. All City services will resume their regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, September 3.

Public Safety services and Airport operations will continue to operate throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.

The Joplin City Council meeting, regularly scheduled on the first Monday, will shift to Tuesday, September 3. It will be held at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 602 South Main St.

Due to the holiday, residential trash will not be picked up on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. Customers who usually have trash picked up on Mondays will have their trash picked up on Tuesday, September 3. For the remainder of the week, the residential trash will move forward one day with Friday’s customers having service on Saturday.

Fairview man injured in accident west of Purdy

A Fairview man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:45 a.m. today on Route B five miles west of Purdy.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2014 Toyota Scion XB driven by John D. Butler, 48, Fairview, ran off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox and overturned.

Butler was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Cassville.

Lane reductions, delays expected on McDonald County Route PP

Where: McDonald County Route PP between Missouri Route 43 in Southwest City south approximately 1.3 miles to the Missouri/Arkansas state line

When: 7 a.m-7 p.m. Monday, September 9

Traffic impacts

Traffic reduced to one lane where contractor crews are laying asphalt

Drivers will encounter flaggers and pilot cars where crews are working. Drivers should wait for the pilot vehicle before proceeding through the work zone or before entering the work zone from a side road.

Work will be done during daytime hours; all lanes open to traffic at night

This project is part of Gov. Parson’s Rural Routes program. The state’s approved Fiscal Year 2023 budget provided an additional $100 million in General Revenue for work on Missouri’s low volume rural roads. Using asset management data, MoDOT has identified approximately 1,700 lane miles of low volume roads ranked in Poor Condition. By the end of the program, these 113 locations will receive resurfacing treatments of hot mix asphalt to improve the road conditions.

One fatality in rollover crash on I-44 in Joplin

On August 27th, 2024, the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received 911 reports of a rollover crash involving a semi tractor trailer at the 9-mile marker on Interstate 44 westbound at the Rangeline Road exit. 

Officers with the Joplin Police Department, as well as personnel with the Joplin Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance, METS Ambulance, Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT, all responded to the scene. 

It was determined a semi tractor trailer was westbound on I-44 and left the roadway near the start of the off ramp to Rangeline Road and struck an overhead sign support pole. The resulting crash resulted in a cargo spill (non-hazardous) and significant damage to the overhead support sign. 

The driver of the semi tractor trailer was pronounced deceased on scene. 

Members of the Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team responded and are actively investigating to determine probable contributing circumstances of the crash and probable cause of death of the driver. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending formal notification of next of kin.
