Carthage man killed in fiery crash

A Carthage man was killed in a one-vehicle accident 5:25 a.m. today on County Road 170 two miles west of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1992 Ford F-150 driven by a 78-year-old Carthage man traveled off the right side of the road and caught fire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by at 5:41 a.m. by Jasper County Coroner James Harrison.

The fatality was the 58th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Joplin city offices closed Friday for July 4 holiday

The City of Joplin offices will be closed for Independence Day on Friday, July 4. This closing includes the Recycling Center, Sunshine Lamp Trolley and MAPS Transportation services. City offices and programs will resume their regularly scheduled hours on Monday, July 7.

Please note that Republic Services has notified us that they will run their regular route on Friday, so residential trash and curbside recycling will not change due to the Independence Day holiday.

Carver Day celebration set for July 12

George Washington Carver National Monument announces its annual Carver Day Celebration to be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the park. The event is free of charge.

Carver Day celebrates the life of George Washington Carver and the national monument in his honor. This year will commemorate the 82nd anniversary of George Washington Carver’s passing and the subsequent establishment of the national park on July 14, 1943.

Guest speaker Michelle Brooks (pictured) will present Tuskegee Airmen from Lincoln University, and musical performances will be provided by two bands: Cherry and Jerry of St. Louis, Missouri, and the Kufara Marimba Band, a Zimbabwean- style ensemble.

Children are invited to explore the park, and guided tours will be available. The Diamond Lions Club will offer food concessions.

Carver Day is presented in partnership with the Carver Birthplace Association, and administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior.

George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver - scientist, educator, and humanitarian. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri, on Highway V, then ¼ mile south on Carver Road. JoMoCon scheduled for Saturday, August 2

One of Southwest Missouri’s favorite summertime events is just around the corner! 

JoMoCon, the Joplin-based pop culture convention, will be roaring back to life on Saturday, August 2nd from 10am to 6pm. 

This convention keeps growing each year, and so it has moved to the all new Joplin Expo located in the old Macy’s building on the East side of Northpark Mall.

This family friendly event provides attendees with a full day of live performances, video and tabletop gaming, cosplay and other contests, as well as plenty of shopping opportunities with over 85 confirmed vendors. 

Other features will include returning fan favorites like the Maid Cafe’, the LARP Fighting Arena, and Smash Bros Melee Tournament. JoMoCon will also be hosting special guest Mr. Terrence Stone, who is a Kansas City based voice actor and director. 

A substantial portion of the admission proceeds from this year’s JoMoCon will be donated to Bright Futures Joplin. Bright Futures provides school supplies, food, and mentoring programs to at-risk children in the Joplin school system in support of their educational goals.
