A Jasper woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash 6:50 p.m. Monday on Route M, two miles south of Jasper.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2011 Chrysler driven by Samantha I. Steeves, 20, Jasper, failed to yield and pulled into the path of a 2003 Ford truck driven by Lonny A Pearson, 29, Creighton.
Steeves was treated for minor injuries at Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

Four, including two 4-year-olds, injured in accident near Oronogo
Four people were injured in a two-vehicle accident 7:56 a.m. today on Ivy Road, three miles west of Oronogo.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 BMW driven by Tina E. Kennedy, 46, Carl Junction, failed to stop at a stop sign and pulled into the path of a 2008 GMC Yukon driven by Kelsey D. Lewis, 22, Webb City.
Kennedy was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.
Lewis and two passengers, Kenzi Reabis, 4, and Lilly Reabis, 4, both of Webb City, were treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

City of Joplin to offer seminar for homebuyers

The City of Joplin recognizes the importance of Homebuyer Education Programs in helping families to understand the process of purchasing a new home and the responsibilities that come with home ownership. To help area citizens with this process, the City is holding a free homebuyer education seminar on Saturday, October 3. The program begins at 9 a.m., and will break for lunch at 12 noon and continue from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is on your own. It will be held in the basement of the Joplin City Hall located at 602 South Main in Joplin. Please park in the parking lot on the west side (back) of City Hall and enter through the west door entrance which is also ADA accessible.
Residents who have purchased a home through the Joplin Homebuyer Assistance Program (J-HAP) or who are considering a purchase through J-HAP are encouraged to attend.
Larry R. Eller, Joplin Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program Manager, will conduct the seminar. Over the last 35 years, he has been directly involved in the construction of 150 new affordable single family homes and has helped over 400 families to achieve their dream of home ownership through various federal and state housing programs. He will welcome questions and participation from attendees throughout the session.
“Purchasing a home can be a major life decision,” he said. “We invite our citizens to start this journey with the first step of attending this seminar to help remove some of the stress and worry out of home buying.”
Topics to be covered during the seminar include:
• Managing Your Money
• Understanding Credit
• Getting a Mortgage Loan
• Shopping for a Home
• Keeping Your Home and Managing Your Finances
Each participant will receive a free notebook entitled Realizing the American Dream published by the Neighborhood Works organization along with a Certificate of Completion. The materials for this seminar have been purchased with Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Empirical studies have shown that families who participate in homebuyer education programs are less likely to default on mortgage loans and are better able to tackle the challenges that come with homeownership.

Send off for Crowder-Drury solar team set for Tuesday

A diverse team of students from Drury University and Crowder College is entering the final stretch of an 18-month-long effort to design, build and operate a cutting-edge home for the national Solar Decathlon contest.
The media and public are invited to tour the house and help send off the team from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Student team members, faculty advisors and representatives from some of the project’s many sponsors will be present and available to media for interviews. Team members can be made available in the days before and after the open house, as well, upon request.
The house, currently being built on the Crowder campus in Neosho, will be disassembled and loaded onto trucks on Sept. 23 for the trip to the Decathlon, which takes place during the month of October in the desert outside Irvine, California.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, this international contest pits future architects, engineers, marketers and business people from the nation’s top colleges against one another, challenging them to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. The winner of the competition will be the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
The Crowder-Drury entry accomplishes all this – and more. Dubbed ShelteR3, or “Shelter Cubed,” the house has a three-prong design philosophy of Respond, Recover, and Resist. Inspired by the devastating and deadly 2011 Joplin tornado, the house is transportable so that it can be trucked to disaster areas during emergency response and recovery efforts. It can then be converted into a permanent and stylish living structure that is designed to resist the extreme winds and debris clouds of future tornadoes.
“Students from 22 different majors here at Drury and from Crowder have poured countless hours of time and talent into this project over the last year and a half,” said Traci Sooter, project manager and a faculty advisor to the team. “It’s incredibly exciting to see the ShelteR3 house become a reality and we cannot wait to finally stack our ideas up against the other teams.”

Tuesday, Sept. 22
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, at noon, kindergarten students at West Central Elementary, 1001 W. Seventh St., will celebrate Eagle Pride with a little help from Eddie the Eagle and a special Eagle Pride coloring book. Representatives from Joplin High School's football team and cheerleading squad will help distribute free coloring books, which feature a young Eddie the Eagle and highlight the many qualities that make up a Joplin Eagle. The coloring books are distributed to kindergarten students throughout the district during Homecoming week. This is an annual tradition created to inspire Joplin Schools' youngest students to develop and celebrate school pride.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, area residents can support the JHS Archery Team and enjoy an evening of country music featuring Billy Dean, Grammy Award winning artist; Larry Stewart, lead singer and the voice of the band Restless Heart; and Jason Pritchett, top five finalists on America's Got Talent. The performance starts at 7 p.m. at Joplin High School Performing Arts Center, 2104 Indiana Ave. After the show, the performers will sign autographs in the lobby. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 417-623-1800. Proceeds benefit the JHS Archery team's 2015-2016 season.
