MSSU Board approves new master's program

(From Southern News Service)

The Board of Governors at Missouri Southern State University has given its approval to a plan to offer a new master’s degree program through the Robert W. Plaster School of Business.

During a meeting on Friday, Sept. 19, the board learned the school is seeking permission from Missouri’s Higher Education Commission to launch a Master of Science in Management degree beginning in the fall of 2015.

The degree will be comprised of two tracks – human resource management and general management, said Dr. John Groesbeck, dean of the business school. Part-time students will be able to complete the degree in a minimum of five semesters, while full-time students can complete it in three.

“It’s a good next step for us given our strength in human resource management,” he said. “It will be a 30 credit-hour degree, with 21 hours of required core and 9 hours of flexibility. Students could get their master’s in management and develop their own tailor-made emphasis track in any number of subjects.”

During Friday’s meeting, the board also received an update on two new master’s degree programs that were launched at the beginning of the fall semester – Master of Science in Education-Curriculum and Instruction, and Master of Accountancy.

There are 12 students enrolled in the curriculum and instruction program, said Dr. Al Cade, interim dean of the School of Education.

“We’re very pleased with how it’s going. We have two terrific instructors and all indications are that our students are enjoying it and able to take things away that will help them in their career and current classrooms,” he said.

“We’re excited about having the numbers we have and are looking forward to beginning a new cohort each and every year.”

The accountancy program has 15 students seeking the degree, said Groesbeck.

“It’s meeting our expectations and providing an important service to the professional accounting community,” he said. “It helps our students achieve their professional goals while they meet the 150-hour requirement by state law for sitting for the CPA exam. The intent is focused on preparing our students for a very significant career in professional accountancy.”

The two master’s programs were designed to provide further educational opportunities to current students and alumni.

“I love teaching and I think education is really important, so (getting my master’s) was a personal goal of mine,” said Leandra Tuggle, a student in the curriculum and instruction program who received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 2010.

“Having already been familiar with the processes here at Missouri Southern with my undergraduate, I was really excited about continuing to work with some of the professors that I had known previously.

“Plus, Southern is so flexible, accessible and affordable that it was just serendipitous. It was perfect.”
