JPD participating in campaign to increase awareness of child protection systems

(From the Joplin Police Department)

This week, the Joplin Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the State will participate in an enforcement campaign aimed at increasing the awareness of Child Protection Systems in automobiles.

During the last 3 years there were a total of 24 children under the age of eight who died on our
roadways. An additional 106 suffered disabling injuries. Missouri law requires all children under the age of eight to be in an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat unless they are 80 lbs. or 4’9” tall. Regular child safety seat and safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. Crashes are the No. 1 killer of kids.

The Joplin Police Department will have extra staffing dedicated for the enforcement of child restraints. Unlike adults choosing to wear or not wear a seatbelt in an automobile child restraints are a primary law, meaning that you can be stopped and ticketed for the violation.

The goal is to prevent injury before it happens. If you have questions about the proper installation or use of your Child Restraint System please contact the Joplin Police Department’s Traffic Division. CPS technicians are also available through other organizations such as the Alliance of Southwest Missouri.
