Jasper woman arrested on meth, obstruction charges

(From the Jasper Police Department)

On Monday, May 11, 2020 at 2138 hours, Jasper PD Sgt. Amber Ashby attempted to stop a red Chevrolet truck with no plates leaving Pete's Convenient store. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

Sgt. Ashby observed the truck earlier in the evening at a location on East Morrison known to have criminal activity present as well as illegal narcotics.

Moments prior to the attempted traffic stop, a Jasper resident, Jamey Smith, drove into Pete's parking lot and parked next to Sgt. Ashby’s patrol car and attempted to direct Sgt. Ashby’s attention away from the truck and person driving the truck. Sgt. Ashby very quickly caught on and stayed the course, watching the subject driving the truck attempt to drive off while Smith had Sgt. Ashby’s attention.

Due to the heavy rain and his excessive speed by the suspect driving the vehicle, Sgt. Ashby refused to drive as recklessly as the suspect and terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

On Tuesday, May 12th, 2020, Jasper officers followed up on Sgt. Ashby’s case. Officers made contact with Jamey Smith at her address on ‪East Morrison St. ‬ in reference to a follow up to a pursuit the night before where she was reported to have attempt to interfere/obstruct the duties of JsPD Sgt. Amber Ashby.

After questioning, Smith admitted she did in fact make up a story to Sgt. Ashby, in an attempt to get her to leave Pete's parking lot so a make acquaintance of hers could leave without Sgt. Ashby trying to stop him.

After further investigation, it was determined that Buddy Willis (Golden City) was the driver of the vehicle that fled. Further more, the story that Willis was the driver was backed up by a FB messenger log that showed that Willis called Smith ‪at 9:29 pm‬, moments before he led Officer Ashby on a traffic pursuit. ‪At 10:04 pm‬, Willis sent a message to Smith saying "I made it."

While officers were talking with Smith, they observed drug paraphernalia in plain view on the dresser.

A search of the residence was conducted. The following was found:

•Buprenorphine, a controlled/scheduled narcotic, a plastic baggy with about ‪1/4-1/2‬ gram of a powder substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, as well as a glass pipe used for smoking methamphetamine and a baggy with marijuana.

Smith was arrested for obstructing/interfering with an officer, possession of controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After obtaining video from Pete’s, it was determined the suspect who fled was in fact Buddy Willis.

Buddy Willis was contacted at an address near Golden City. The vehicle involved in the pursuit was found and towed. Willis faces charges for resisting arrest by fleeing and numerous traffic violations.

Note: All suspects involved in this incident are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Good work by Sgt. Davis... Thank you for being relentless in the watching of known drug houses and being proactive in her approach to rid Jasper of criminals and criminal activity. Great job on her decision to consider the safety of herself, safety of other’s and to outweigh the risk vs the reward in this pursuit and terminating the pursuit. Thank you for your great service you give to Jasper, Sgt. Amber Ashby.

Thank you Barton County Sheriff’s Office for your assistance in this investigation.

To anybody who wishes to flee from Jasper Officers, we have a 100% “catch you” ratio in the last five years... It might not be during the actual pursuit, but we don’t ever stop there. We will hunt you until we find you and hold you responsible for your actions. Total team effort by the officers of the Jasper Police Dept. Please make the RIGHT decision to not come to Jasper and commit crime.
