City officials will gather with Joplin Regional Airport staff and Board Members and Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors to officially open the Airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Building.
The Ribbon Cutting event will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, at the new facility, located near the Air Traffic Control Tower, 600 Colonial Drive, Webb City. Please enter the tower road from Colonial Drive and park east of the Control Tower.
Completion of this facility provides storage for two ARFF trucks and associated equipment along with the airport personnel trained to operate them. The airport’s snow removal equipment (SRE) will also be stored in this 12,353 square foot building. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all of this equipment.
“In a critical situation, it is important for airport staff to have immediate access to these essential pieces of equipment so this centrally located fire station is a great asset. Airport personnel must be able to respond to an incident on the field in a matter of seconds,” said Joplin Airport Manager Allison Zahner.”
Snow removal and ice control are obvious concerns for all airports and are required by the FAA for airports with commercial service, including Joplin Regional Airport.
Crossland Construction, Inc. was the contractor for the project. Total cost was $8,681,710 with a 95/5 federal to local share. With two federal grants, the Federal Aviation Administration share totals $8,226,537, with the local share amounting to $455,173. The local share includes $22,198 for costs which were not eligible for reimbursement.
“This facility is a valuable safety resource for the airport, as well as the City and our community,” said Mayor Keenan Cortez. “We are pleased to have this building completed and thankful for the two federal grants received for the project. This assistance allowed the local match to be minimal when considering the full cost of this project.”
