Jasper County deputies on administrative leave after officer-involved shooting of Joplin man

On 4-13-2025 at approximately 1:39 AM., Jasper County Deputies were dispatched to a domestic in progress at 19724 County Road 70 in Jasper, Mo. 

When deputies arrived, they made contact with a male inside the residence armed with a knife and gave commands for the male to get on the ground. 








The male then charged at the deputies with the knife. He was tased twice with no effect and continued advancing with the knife. A deputy then fired his duty weapon, striking the male - both deputies then began rendering medical aid to the male until EMS arrived. 

The male was taken to a local hospital for treatment.






 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was called to take over the investigation. The deputies have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed. The male is identified as Gavon Newton, 43, of Joplin. 

Charges were submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for Domestic Assault 4th, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Armed Criminal Action. Those charges have been filed and there is no bond. This investigation is ongoing and more information may be released at a later date.
