Newton County deputies arrest Carthage man for stealing, property damage after saw used to cut telephone wires

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

On April 14th Newton County Deputy Ashley Tackett responded to the area of Dutch Elm Dr near Eland Rd after Central Dispatch had received a call in which the caller had seen a male on the side of the road.

The caller heard what she thought was a saw and suspected the male was cutting telephone wire.

Deputy Tackett located a vehicle in the area and a male nearby. She quickly discovered approximately a quarter of a mile of telephone wire was down. The male was in possession of a saw and the investigation revealed that he had cut the telephone wire with the intent of stealing. It was determined that there was approximately $6,000 worth of damage to the telephone wire.

The male, Jeremy M. Scott, 45, of Carthage Mo had an active failure to appear warrant for his arrest from Jasper County. Charges were submitted to the Newton County Prosecutor’s Office for Stealing and Property Damage. He is currently in custody at the Newton County Jail.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information about thefts of utility wire or any other thefts to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 417-451-8333.
