Golden City man arrested on burglary charge following search warrant execution

(From the Barton County Sheriff's Office)

On May 30th, 2025, Deputies with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the address of 701 Church St., Golden City, MO 64748.

A Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office had been working an ongoing investigation involving theft and multiple burglaries. A suspect was developed during this investigation, which led to a search warrant being written for the above-listed address.

Deputies served the search warrant at approximately 2:00PM on May 30th, 2025. Upon initial contact with the residence, two males were detained. After approximately 15 minutes of making announcements over the PA system of a patrol car, no one else exited the residence.

Deputies then entered the residence to make sure no one else was inside. When Deputies entered the residence, a male and a female were discovered in the bedroom of the residence. Both were detained and escorted outside. Upon detaining the male inside the residence, he began to show signs of overdosing.

Deputies feared the male may have tried to swallow an unknown amount of narcotics to avoid a charge.

Deputies immediately radioed dispatch and requested an ambulance and first responders. A Deputy on scene was able to administer Naloxone (Narcan) that was issued by the Sheriff’s Office. Two doses were administered to the male. The male was later treated by EMS and refused any further medical treatment.

Deputies searched the property and located items that were taken in recent thefts. It was determined that the main person of interest in this investigation was a male identified as Colton Nelson (36) of Golden City, MO.

Colton was the first person detained upon initial contact of this operation. Colton was later awarded a nice pair of metal cuffs perfectly fitted to his wrist. He was later transported to the Barton County Jail where he was detained on probable cause of the thefts.

On May 31st, 2025, a warrant was applied for Colton Nelson by the Prosecuting Attorney. On the same day, a warrant was issued by the Honorable Judge James Nichols for the charge of Burglary 2nd Degree with a Cash/Surety bond of $25,000.

Remember, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
