(From the City of Joplin)Joplin Recycling Center’s FREE Tire Drop-Off Event is set for Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Lone Elm Plant, 2214 N. Lone Elm Road.
“The City moved the drop-off to the North Lone Elm site to accommodate more space for this very popular collection,” said Scott Patterson, Recycling Coordinator. “Last year, this event drew 110 vehicles, collected 12.6 tons of tires, along with a quarter ton of aluminum rims and three and a half tons of steel rims. That’s A LOT of tires, and we were pleased to get these so they could be disposed of properly.”
Patterson anticipates another great collection this year and cautions drivers to avoid North Lone Elm Road, if possible, due to the traffic congestion from this event. He also reminds citizens that the Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday, June 7, as staff work at the collection site for another record year of dropped-off tires. The Recycling Center will reopen with its normal hours on Tuesday, June 10.
Automotive passenger tires, with or without rims, will be accepted. Please remove water and mud from inside the tires. There is a ten-tire limit per vehicle, and multiple visits are not allowed. Semi, tractor, ATV, and racing tires will not be accepted. Tires cannot have rims larger than 20-inches. Please no commercial vehicles, haulers or generators of scrap tires.
Since the 1990s, when whole tires were banned from landfills to conserve landfill space and keep out hazardous materials, citizens have needed options to discard tires. Worst-case scenarios include tires becoming eyesores and mosquito havens when left in yards or ditches where they collect water. The City and our partners are pleased to offer this community service for our area.
The City of Joplin manages this event and works closely with Region M Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. In the 1990s, whole tires were banned from Kansas and Missouri landfills to conserve landfill space and prevent hazardous materials from entering them.
“Our tire drop-off program provides area residents a free way to get rid of their old tires and helps to keep our neighborhoods and natural areas litter-free,” said Scott Patterson, Recycling Coordinator. “Removing tires can be difficult and expensive because landfills do not accept them. Unfortunately, people may resort to dropping them off along roadways or wooded areas, or may leave them in the yard where they collect rainwater and breed mosquitoes.”
The collected tires will be hauled to a recycling facility where they can be made into playground cover, garden hoses, trash cans, rug and floor mats, loading dock bumpers, parking lot wheel stops, road paving aggregate, running- and biking-friendly trail pavement, rubber bands, and much more! All metal rims will also be recycled.
Throughout the year, the Joplin Recycling Center accepts cardboard, paper, plastic #1 and #2 bottles with necks, glass, metal, cooking oil, egg cartons, hazardous waste, and batteries at no charge. Electronic waste is also accepted at no charge, with the exception of a $10 recycling fee for TV and computer screens. This event and the Center are open to everyone in the Region M Waste Management District which includes McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton, and Vernon Counties. The Joplin Recycling Center is funded in part by Region M Waste Management District.
