(From KGCS)Affordable housing is a concern of citizens in Joplin that was raised during the city council elections. According to Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Scott Clayton, 1 in 8 households in the state of Missouri spends more than 50% of their income on housing and 62% of renters spend more than a third of their income on housing. The charity’s efforts to solve that problem for local veterans with a new 10-plex apartment building is the focus of the next Newsmakers program.
Clayton is joined by Habitat for Humanity board member Ted Donaldson to discuss the Agape Apartments under construction now at 18th and New Hampshire in Joplin. Clayton explains the role of the Joplin Economic Housing Development Initiative in helping to facilitate the project. U.S. Marine Veteran Tim Peay shares his experience receiving a Veteran Build Home from Habitat and the issues facing veterans that make the apartment complex beneficial.
