Academics

·         Priority enrollment for Spring 2018 begins Nov. 13 for sophomores with 28+ hours and Nov. 16 for Freshmen with 1-27 hours. ·         The college will be closed for the Thanksgiving break Nov. 22-26. We will reopen normal hours on Monday Nov. 27 which is the first day of Open Enrollment.

·         Finals week: Dec. 11-14

·         Fall commencement ceremony will be held Sat. Dec. 16, 10am in the Bob Sneller Gymnasium.

Athletics

·         Roughrider Soccer finished their season 10-6-1.

·         Congratulations to Daniel Ost being named to the 1^st team Region 16 Soccer team. He was also nominated by the Region 16 Coaches for NJCAA All-American. Way to go Daniel!

Campus Events

·         Homecoming week events – Neosho campus:

o    Oct 30 – Student Government Association meeting at 2:30 in the Student Center – Free Pizza!

o    Oct 30 – Giving Tree application available in Student Center or via email: CampusLife@Crowder.edu

o    Oct 31 – Halloween Dance, 8pm-midnight. Free food, drinks, treats. Costume dance party with DJ KELLZ!

o    Nov 1 – Home opener Basketball game, 6pm, Bob Sneller Gym. Free t-shirts to the 1^st 50 students.

o    Nov 2 – Bonfire in Brown Dorm area. 7-10pm. Free s’mores, hot dogs, drinks & music. Open to any student.

·         Community Education classes have been scheduled for the fall semester in Neosho. These short workshops are for community members as they are geared towards hobbies and special interests. Joplin man identified as pedestrian who was killed Saturday on I-44

Update: The deceased male was identified on Saturday 10/28/17 as Antwon McPherson, 41, Joplin. His family has been notified.

Original News Release

On 10/26/2017 at 11:17pm we responded to the 4.2mm Eastbound I-44 for reports of a person laying on the road. 

Officers arrived and determined that a tractor trailer had struck a pedestrian at that location. The pedestrian was deceased and has yet to be identified. 

The tractor trailer that struck the pedestrian was located by Missouri State Highway Patrol at Flying J Truck Stop. The driver was also located. The Joplin Police Department Crash Team Responded to investigate

Crowder College receives $2.5 million grant to promote student success

Crowder College is the recipient of a Title III Grant which will amount to almost $2.5M over a five year period. Title III funding will promote student success by providing more specific direction for students in their pursuit to a certification or degree.

The grant project, Connect, was adapted from the Guided Pathways model demonstrated nationwide to boost progress and completion. Crowder recorded the highest number of graduates for 2016-17 with 1,118. This is a 21.65 percent increase over last year’s record number of 919.

The college attributes the increase in number of graduates to its strategic efforts in retaining students from semester to semester on the path to completion of a degree or certification. The grant will provide for continued growth as more students will be working with advisors to ensure they are taking the appropriate class while engaging in programs geared to their strengths. The project also includes the development of new instructional formats and provides technology updates to support student learning.

“The Title III grant project Connect was intentionally designed to support the work we have been doing through our strategic plan to promote student success by improving our retention and graduation rates. Additional advising, supplemental support, active learning, improved technology, new compressed instructional formats, and the possibility of stacking credentials are key to keeping students engaged and on a path to completion,” stated Dr. Jennifer Methvin, President.

The college continues to strive to provide an affordable education to students whether they are planning to enter the workforce or continue at a university upon graduation. Students have the ability to take classes at more than one location as Crowder College has locations throughout its nine-county service region. This fall, 4,960 students are attending Crowder College at one of these locations or online.

Joplin man charged with assault following stabbing at Watered Gardens

On 10-28-2017 at 9:15 p.m. officers were dispatched to 531 Kentucky, Watered Gardens, for a report of a stabbing by the front door. 

Officers arrived and located a male who had been stabbed multiple times. The male was given aid on scene and transported by METS to a local hospital in Critical Condition. The victim is identified as Allen Johnson, 21, and is still in the hospital in ICU, but said to be stable.

Officers searching for the suspect located him at 10th and Main a few minutes after the initial call. He was taken into custody without incident. He is identified as Bradley D Cook, 31, Joplin. He is currently being held on a $10,000 cash bond for assault in the 1st degree as filed by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.

Golden City man injured in accident on I-49

A Golden City man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 2:50 p.m. Sunday on I-49 at Lamar.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Daniel L. Foster, 43, Golden City, changed lanes into the side of a 2004 Nissan Titan driven by Timothy D. Lewis, 60, Rifle, Colorado. The Foster vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and down an embankment.

Foster was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
