Carthage man injured in accident on 96

A Carthage man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:52 p.m. today on MO 96, a half mile east of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Ram 1500 driven by Rick R. Baird, 75, Carthage, tried to avoid a dog than ran into the roadway, left the roadway, struck several small trees and overturned.

Baird was treated for minor injuries at Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

Carthage Police sergeant honored outstanding, courageous effort

At this evening's Carthage City Council meeting Sgt. Hayden Swinehart was recognized for his outstanding and courageous police work on the night of October 12, 2020 being awarded the Medal of Valor.

Sgt. Swinehart attempted to stop a vehicle for erratic driving and suspecting the driving of being impaired. The suspect fled in his vehicle and Sgt. Swinehart pursued. 

During the vehicle pursuit the suspect fired multiple shots from a firearm at Sgt. Swinehart. The suspect ultimately lost control of his vehicle where he crashed and overturned. 

He was taken into custody by Sgt. Swinehart with the assistance of the Jasper County Sheriffs Office.

Wellness grants awarded to Missouri Southern

Grant funding has been awarded to the Lion Co-op Food and Personal Hygiene Pantry, as well as to Missouri Southern’s Wellness program.

The $10,642 grant awarded to the co-op by the No Kid Hungry campaign will go toward supplying weekend snack packs to children ages 1-5 who qualify for state or tribal financial assistance attending Lion Cub Academy.

The national program assists in meeting the nutritional needs of children who may not be getting adequate food over the weekend. 

According to Dr. Andrea Cullers, director of the Lion Co-op, the year-long grant funding will provide bags of shelf-stable food for at least one year, at which point the need will be reassessed.

“The Lion Co-op works to decrease food insecurity for all members of the Lion community, and we’re excited that through the No Kid Hungry grant funding we can help meet the needs of our littlest lions at the Lion Club Academy,” said Cullers.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has also awarded up to $6,000 to help defray the cost of outdoor fitness equipment, which will be installed near the new one-mile walking path. The equipment will include elements which will allow students and employees additional opportunities to work areas of agility, balance, flexibility, muscle strength, core work and aerobic fitness.

Joplin Parks and Rec to team with MSSU for Independence Day celebration

In consideration of the Missouri Southern State University COVID Operation Plan, the City of Joplin and Missouri Southern State University have modified the 2021 Independence Day Celebration to a fireworks-only show. The fireworks will be set off on the eastern side of the Missouri Southern State University campus on Sunday, July 4th at 9:45 p.m.

On May 24, 2021, MSSU moved to Modified Phase One of campus operations concerning the COVID pandemic. Under the Modified Phase One plan, mass gatherings for non-classroom activities require 6-feet of social distancing between participants.

 

“With respect to the MSSU operations plan, we will keep the celebration the same as 2020,” said Paul Bloomberg, Parks and Recreation Director. “Continuing the fireworks display gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy a traditional July 4th activity while being mindful of the guidelines.”

Area residents are welcome to watch the display from designated MSSU parking lots. “The eastern side of campus is one of the tallest points in Joplin, which provides a good viewing experience from different vantage points around the area,” said Bloomberg.

Parking lots will open at 8:30 p.m. with the fireworks show starting at 9:45 p.m. Ten minutes prior to the show’s beginning, crews will light a single firework for display to alert the audience of the impending start. The show will last approximately 20 minutes and will be set to music, which visitors can tune into 88.7 KXMS to experience. The entirety of the fireworks celebration will be broadcast live on KGCS TV Channel 21 and on KCGS Facebook page.

The stadium and amenities will be closed to the public.
