A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive Monday, April 10, 2017 to examine all aspects of Joplin Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Chief Matt Stewart announced today.
Verification by the team that Joplin Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, Stewart said.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. The session will be conducted in the Joplin Municipal Court Room in the Donald P. Clark Public Safety Center located at 303 East 3rd Street.
If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call (417) 623-3131 ext 473 on April 11, 2017 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards. A copy of the standards is available at Joplin Police Department. Local contact is Captain Rusty Rives at (417) 623-3131 ext 639.
Persons wishing to offer written comments about Joplin Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation/recognition are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.
Joplin Police Department must comply with 482 standards to maintain accredited/recognized status, Chief Stewart said. “I am pleased to announce our upcoming accreditation onsite and welcome CALEA assessors to our department. Through CALEA accreditation, we assure our department is abiding by internationally-recognized law enforcement standards to show our citizens and visitors that Joplin Police Department is the best it can be.”
The CALEA Program Manager for Joplin Police Department is Timothy “Tim” Baysinger. The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.
The assessors are: Chief Michael Dickey from the City of Fairfield Ohio Police Department, and Ms. Paula Fox who is retired from the Manchester, New Hampshire Police Department.
Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited/recognition status, Program Manager Baysinger stated.
Accreditation/Recognition is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
