Isaac Costley named Joplin Police Department Officer of the Month

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Please join us in congratulating Corporal Isaac Costley on being recognized as the Officer of the Month for December of 2020. Cpl. Costley's award was based on the following nomination:

Cpl. Costley is being recognized this month for his continuous demonstrations of good tactics, excellent communication skills, and quality leadership.

There have been many new officers hired over the last few years at JPD. Cpl. Costley has led his officers in several situations and taken control to bring incidents to a correct and timely conclusion, all while teaching and mentoring the officers that work with him.

Some examples of these situations have involved individuals going through a mental crisis. In many of the situations it appeared at the beginning that officers would have to use force to subdue the individual and transport them to the hospital so they would not hurt themselves or others.

On two occasions during the month Cpl. Costley arrived on scene, he began a dialogue with the individual and gave the needed time in speaking with them and bringing the situation to a resolution without the use of any force.

Several officers were present during this and Costley showed to be a great example of the steps to go through in these situations to try and insure a safe conclusion.

Cpl. Costley had been in charge when major incidents occurred during the month. He ran the initial response to a bank robbery and taken control of several incidents involving fleeing subjects and uses of force. Costley does an excellent job handling these situations and goes above and beyond to debrief them with those involved after they are over.

Thank you, Corporal Costley, for your service, hard work, and dedication to our profession and the citizens we serve.

Respectfully,
Sloan A. Rowland
Chief of Police
