Joplin Carnegie Library restoration effort topic of Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

It was Joplin’s very first library and it is getting a new life. The Joplin Carnegie Library has a new owner who is working to declutter and restore the building that is on the National Historic Register. Those efforts and the library’s history are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Laurie Anderson purchased the library as a fun project for her and her father. The 123-year-old structure was opened on October 8, 1902, but closed as a library not long after being added to the National Historic Register in 1979. A new library was built downtown and opened in 1981. Anderson explains the challenges of restoration after damage from multiple fires, squatters and leaks. Jill Halbach with the Joplin Post Art Library shares the building’s history and area residents share their memories as patrons in a video montage.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning on KGCS-TV May 3 and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.
