Open house scheduled for applied suspension training research lab at MSSU

(From Missouri Southern State University)

Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) will host an open house and ribbon cutting on May 1 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the LG-PLT Building to celebrate the launch of its new Applied Suspension Training Research (ASTR) Lab, founded by Dr. Rawsam Alasmar, and the Dynamic Athletic Research Institute (DARI) Lab, founded by Dr. Conor Theiss.

The ASTR Lab focuses on suspension-based training using the PENDL device, which combines flexible straps and controlled oscillation to improve physical performance and help reduce injury risk, especially in the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. MSSU is currently the only university in the world with four PENDL devices, allowing for expanded research, teaching, and training.

Dr. Alasmar’s work integrates biomechanics, neuromusculoskeletal conditioning, and injury prevention, while also exploring rehabilitation applications for conditions such as autism, ADHD, PTSD, stroke recovery, and vertigo.

The event will also showcase additional upgrades within the Department of Kinesiology, including the DARI 3D motion analysis system led by Dr. Conor Theiss, which uses markerless technology to assess movement, and the COSMED Q-NRG MAX system, which evaluates metabolic function, energy use, and aerobic capacity through VO2 max and resting metabolic rate testing.

Together, these new labs enhance MSSU’s ability to provide immersive learning opportunities, support student research, and prepare students for careers in health, fitness, and clinical fields.
