(From the City of Joplin)
Officials with Housing and Urban Development will join City and Mercy representatives as the community gathers to open Joplin’s newest park on Tuesday, August 9. Located at the southeast corner of 26th Street and McClelland Boulevard, this park was made possible through a land donation from Mercy Hospital, and funding through the Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery program administered by HUD. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include recognition of the citizens who suggested the name Mercy Park through the City’s naming contest held earlier this year.
To commemorate the naming of the Park, the winning citizens will provide their reasons in suggesting Mercy Park as the name, and then commemorate this honor by skipping a rock across the park’s pond, the newest water feature in Joplin’s park system. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors will host a Ribbon Cutting at the conclusion of the program.
This 16-acre park includes native landscapes and green space with trails, a large pond, benches, trees, restrooms, and picnic shelters. Entrance to the park and its parking lot is located just south of 26th Street, on the west side of St. John’s Boulevard.
