We continue to see theft from vehicles in our city, but most troubling, is the amount of firearms that are being stolen from vehicles in our city.
Our officers took another report overnight of a firearm stolen from a vehicle. There have been twenty-nine firearms stolen from vehicles this year! This is a trend that we would like to see stop.
We urge gun owners to not leave their firearms in their vehicles unsecured, especially in the overnight hours.
We would also like to remind gun owners to log their make, model and serial number of their firearms so that they have that information for us if it is stolen. All too often when firearms are stolen the owner doesn't know the serial number, making it nearly impossible to locate it or prosecute anyone in the theft.
It was noted in the comments to the department's Facebook posting that this might be less of a problem if the city didn't have so many faux Victim Disarmament Zones like the mall (Missouri statutory concealed carry law is complicated here, all they can do is ask you to leave and of course declare you persona non grata, it's not illegal to carry in such a place until and unless you refuse to leave once asked (although who knows when our Missouri Plan picked higher level judges will change the plain meaning of the law like they did with our Castle Doctrine...)).
