MSSU activities for the week of September 26

Musician Jim Gill will offer a free concert for families with young children at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, on the campus Oval at Missouri Southern State University.

Gill’s music is focused on encouraging playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. He has released seven award-winning CDs. “A Soup Opera,” a sing-along opera story, received an award from the American Library Association in 2010. His latest album – “Vote for Jim” – offers 14 new sing-alongs, dance-alongs and more.

Gill will also serve as a keynote speaker during the Early Childhood Education Conference, to be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at Missouri Southern.

In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Billingsly Student Center Ballroom.

Other activities scheduled at the university next week include screenings of “The Ladykillers” and “The Purge: Anarchy,” and a performance by the Southern Symphony Orchestra.

Tuesday, Sept. 27

Grocery Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lions Den in Billingsly Student Center. Students can play for a chance to win a bag of groceries courtesy of the Campus Activities Board.

Magna Carta – A Failed Peace Treaty That Still Matters: 1 p.m. in BSC’s Phelps Theater. Dr. Paul Teverow, professor of history, will discuss how the 1215 agreement proved to be a failure in the short run, but helped establish basic principles of government that would have a lasting legacy.

“The Ladykillers”: 7 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. The British Film Festival continues with the story of dangerous bank robbers posing as a string quartet who rent a room from an elderly widow.

Thursday, Sept. 28

“The Purge: Election Year”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theater. The screening, presented by the Campus Activities Board, is free and open to the campus community.

Friday, Sept. 29

Jim Gill concert: 6 p.m., campus Oval. Free and open to the public.

“The Purge: Election Year”: 6:30 p.m.

Southern Symphony Orchestra concert: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature the winners of the 2016 Aria Competition. Dr. James Lile will serve as narrator for “Lincoln Portrait.”

Saturday, Oct. 1

Early Childhood Education Conference: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The theme for the event is “Caring, Sharing and Daring to Go the Distance in Early Childhood.” Registration is $45. At the door, it will be $55. To register, visit www.mssu.edu/early-childhood-conference.
