On Sunday, February 26, 2017, Corrections officers of the Barton County Sheriff’s Office were conducting cell checks of the inmates when they observed inmate Nathan A. Goff (age 34) hanging from the phone in the cell with the phone cord around his neck. Correction officers quickly took Goff down, called for Emergency Medical Personnel to respond to the scene.
Goff was transported to the Barton County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Barton County Coroner and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the death.
Frontier Forensics will be conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Goff had been arrested for failure to appear on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
That charge hardly seems a hanging offense.
