Superintendent: Rumor of planned school shooting, hit list at Webb City High School investigated, found not credible

(From Webb City Superintendent Tony Rossetti)

This is a follow-up message regarding school safety and a rumored threat at our high school. The rumor indicated that a student with a “hit list” was planning to commit an act of violence during the statewide tornado drill on Tuesday.

The Webb City Police Department was notified on Sunday regarding these events. A student was identified and investigated. The threat was found not to be credible. No evidence exists that the student actually stated a threat, nor has a list been produced.

Misinformation is abundant and certainly influenced by the tragic events in Florida.

The District takes all threats seriously and this one was no exception.

As Superintendent of Schools for Webb City, and more importantly the father of two high school students, this threat was investigated and responded to appropriately. We plan on carrying out our normal day tomorrow. We have asked our police partners to be a greater presence for added comfort and security. If you have the need for greater detail about the situation please feel free to contact us at Central Office.

Earlier message

We were recently notified of a rumor circulating about a possible situation to occur during tomorrow’s statewide tornado drill.

We have been diligently working with local law enforcement as well as administration regarding the issue. Though we are encouraged that students are reporting what they have heard, after a thorough investigation by law enforcement and administration no credible evidence has been found.

Any and all threats will be taken seriously as our students' and faculty’s safety is our number one priority.
