The public is invited to attend an informational session about Proposition B from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15 at the Joplin Public Library. The meeting is an open house format, allowing citizens to come and go, as their schedules allow.
Prop B is a ½-cent sales tax dedicated to funding retirement plan changes to help improve recruitment and retention of Joplin Police Officers and Firefighters. It will sunset (end) after 12 years or when the Police and Fire Pension Plan reaches 120% funding level, whichever comes first. Proposition B will be decided by Joplin voters during the November 5 election.
Fire Chief Jim Furgerson and Police Chief Matt Stewart along with members of their departments will be at the educational meeting, in addition to members of the Prop B Citizens Task Force, to help the public learn more about this proposal. Citizens are encouraged to come and ask questions related to the proposed sales tax initiative and its purpose.
These representatives have also been attending civic group meetings, senior programs and other events to share information about Proposition B. If someone is interested in having a speaker at their organization or club meeting, they should contact the City’s Public Information Officer to make this request. They can reach her at 417-624-0820, ext. 204 or by emailing her at lonstot@jopinmo.org .
