Newton County Sheriff's Office warns of gift card scams

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints of scams involving the purchase of gift cards.

Common gift card scams:

Scammers say they’re from the government
Scammers say they’re from tech support
Scammers say they’re a friend or family member with an emergency

Scammers say you’ve won a prize
Scammers say they’re from your utility company
Scammers ask for money after they chat with you on a dating website/app
Scammers send a check for way more than you expected

As a reminder:

-The Newton County Sheriff’s Office will NOT call you and notify you of a warrant and request you pay money with a gift card over the phone.

-NO business or government agency will request you purchase gift cards and give them the numbers off the backs of the cards for payment.
