High-school students from across Southwest Missouri will compete in the district Skills USA competition for Precision Machining Technology and Drafting on Friday, Feb. 14, at Missouri Southern State University.
The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ummel Technology Building. The event is hosted by the Engineering Technology Department at Missouri Southern.
Winners of the district competition will qualify to compete in a regional and national competition later this year.
Students will demonstrate their competencies in areas including operation of manual milling machines, lathes, drill presses and surface grinders. Related knowledge and skill in the areas of machine shop safety, engineering drawing interpretation, GD&T, technical math, machining practices, use of precision measuring/hand tools and ability to answer machining related questions using proper industry terminology are also part of the competition.
Students from the following training centers will participate: Carthage Technical Center, Carthage; Southwest Area Career Center, Monett; Lamar Technical Center, Lamar; and Ozark Technical College, Springfield.
Skills USA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce and helps each student excel in areas of leadership and technical education. It is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high-school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
