June 23, 2017

The general work session of the Crowder College Board of Trustees of the Community College District of Newton-McDonald Counties, Missouri, was called to order by Board Chair Mr. Andy Wood, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 23, 2017, in the Newton Hall Conference Room on the Neosho campus.

Members present for the meeting were:

                Andy Wood, Chair
                Vickie Barnes, Treasurer
                Rick Butler, Vice Chair
                Al Chapman, Secretary
                Larry Vancuren, Member
                Diane Andris, Member

Also attending the meeting was:

                Jennifer Methvin, President

I.                   Future Capital Projects

Dr. Methvin led a discussion on potential future capital projects, noting the need to return to a master planning process as time and funding allows. She noted that the Department of Higher Education is changing its process for recommending capital projects to the legislature for funding. Each institution is asked to propose just one priority project. Dr. Methvin shared that a space utilization study will be beneficial as we look toward making a new master plan for capital projects.

General discussion was held about potential future projects and funding sources.

II.            Solar House Maintenance and Repair

Dr. Methvin also reported briefly on planned improvements to the 2002 and 2005 solar houses. The improvements were proposed by a workgroup led by Dr. Oates. The work, which is being funded by a private donor, will be conducted largely by the high school construction classes in 2017-18 under the direction of Andy McClain. Upon completion, the houses will be open for touring again and will be available for office space if needed. Other future maintenance and repair needs at MARET were also discussed.

III.           Vacations, Holidays and Non-Working Days Policy 2.17

Dr. Methvin shared for discussion policy 2.17.3, “paid non-working days for full-time employees.”  Because some of the holidays this year fell on weekend days, Dr. Methvin shared that a concern had been brought to College Council about the confusion concerning if employees got the appropriate number of paid non-working days. College Council asked Dr. Methvin to discuss the policy with the Board. Board members discussed the policy and concurred that no revision of the policy is necessary.

IV.          Institutional Data

Dr. Methvin provided Trustees with the IPEDS Feedback Report comparisons from 2014-1016 and a copy of the institutional data which is kept up-to-date on the MyCrowder employee portal. She outlined what is contained in each. After brief discussion, Mr. Wood suggested that a more in-depth discussion and analysis of the data take place at the September 8 Board Retreat.
