Joplin Police: Human trafficking poster requirements take effect Friday

The state of Missouri has a new law that will affect local business. Missouri Human Trafficking Poster law which requires certain businesses to display the state’s STOP Human Trafficking Poster by March 1, 2019. The new law resulted in a new violation in the State of Missouri Charge Code Manual.

Missouri Human Trafficking Poster Requirement Takes Effect March 1, 2019

The new law is section 595.120 of the Revised Missouri Statutes. As of Aug. 28, 2018, there is now a violation listed as “Owner/operator failed to post human trafficking hotline number” in the State of Missouri Charge Code Manual.







The violation is related to HB 1246, which was approved in 2018. The law requires that Missouri DPS create a human trafficking poster and make it available to the public. This is the extent of the responsibilities assigned to DPS under the new law.

Under HB 1246, beginning March 1, 2019, the Missouri Stop Human Trafficking poster shall be displayed in a conspicuous place in or near the bathrooms or near the entrance of each of the following establishments:

* Hotels, motels, or other establishments that have been cited as a public nuisance for prostitution under section 567.080;

* Strip clubs or other sexually oriented businesses;

* Private clubs that have a liquor permit for on-premises consumption, do not hold themselves out to be food service establishments, and are not affiliated with any nonprofit fraternal, athletic, religious, or veteran organizations;

* Airports;

* Train stations that serve passengers;

* Emergency rooms within general acute care hospitals;

* Urgent care centers;
