Photo exhibition from small Missouri towns among events next week at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

“Point and Periphery: Photographs from Small Missouri Towns,” a solo exhibition by photographer Jimmie Allen, will open Monday, Nov. 1, in the Spiva Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

The exhibit will run through Friday, Nov. 19, and will include an artist talk at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium, followed by a reception in the gallery.

Allen teaches undergraduate photography at Missouri State University. His research centers around documentary photography, including the landscapes of small Midwestern towns and the people who live there.

He has photographed at least one small town in each of the state’s 114 counties looking for signs and clues that show the impact which politics, economics, education, race and religion have on people who live in these communities.

His work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows in the United States, including exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Ill.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
