Kansas man, suspect in February 7 shooting, arrested after firing shots at Joplin police officers

On February 24th, 2023, at approximately 11:18 pm officers with the Joplin Police Department attempted to conduct a high-risk traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Tahoe near 2315 W. 7th Street. 

Officers believed the suspect from this investigation, Adam E. Kastler, was an occupant inside the vehicle. 

During the stop, Kastler forcefully stole the vehicle from the owner and fled the scene from officers. Kastler had active felony warrants out of Newton County for Failure to Appear as well as a Joplin Municipal warrant for Failure to Appear. 








During the pursuit, Kastler fired multiple gunshots at pursuing Joplin Police Officers at multiple points in the pursuit. The pursuit entered Kansas and the suspect vehicle crashed west of Galena. 

Kastler was taken into custody without further incident and transferred to Kansas law enforcement officials. No officers were injured and no officers discharged their weapons during the incident.

Additional criminal charges are being sought against Kastler and further details will be released as they become available.

On Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 04:44 am the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a report of a shooting at 909 S. Monroe Avenue in Joplin. 








Officers responded to the scene and located an adult male who had been shot. Officers began rendering aid until METS and Joplin Fire Personnel arrived on scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. 

The suspect in this incident had fled the scene before officers arrived. No arrest has been made at this time. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30’s and is approximately 6’00 tall and 170 lbs.

Detectives are trying to locate Adam E. Kastler, age 34, of Joplin. Kastler has active felony warrants out of Newton County for Failure to Appear as well as a Joplin Municipal warrant for Failure to Appear.

At 11:24 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, Cherokee County law enforcement were notified a suspect was actively fleeing from, and shooting at, Joplin Police Officers. The pursuit entered Kansas north of Galena, and ended when the suspect crashed north of Highway 66 on Chico Road, west of Galena.

The suspect, identified as 35 year-old Adam Kastler, of Burlingame, Kansas, was apprehended and transported to the Cherokee County Jail.

No law enforcement discharged their firearm, and none were injured during the incident.








Kastler is being held in Cherokee County on allegations of Attempted Capital Murder, Attempting Killing of a Police Dog, Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia, Fleeing Law Enforcement and several other traffic violations.

Additionally, Kastler is being held on multiple outstanding felony warrants from Newton County, Missouri, along with other arrest warrants issued in Lyon County, Emporia and Ford County, in Kansas.

Kastler is also expected to face additional charges in Missouri.

    1. He had not been arrested, but authorities were looking for him as a suspect in the shooting.
