Sarcoxie police check on trespassing dumpster divers nets two arrests, meth, weapon

(From the Sarcoxie Police Department)

On 02/17/2023, two Sarcoxie Officers were notified of individuals dumpster diving on private property. The Officers responded to 1601 Joplin Street and observed a silver passenger vehicle and two males by and inside the dumpster. A female was located in the vehicle.

Contact was made with Brandon Harkins of Pierce City, MO, Andrew Erwin of Aurora, MO, and Erica Wilson of Aurora, MO.

Erwin initially gave the name of Steven Cooney but slipped up when asked again what his birth date was; he gave his correct birth date, he was asked for his real name, and why he lied, he admitted to lying due to having multiple warrants. Erwin was placed under arrest.

Harkins was patted down for officer safety when a fully loaded .22 caliber revolver was recovered from his back pocket. What felt like a needle was in his front pocket. Harkins admitted that it was a needle and a small quantity of methamphetamine. The needle was what we call loaded and ready for use. The needle and crystal-like substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Harkins was placed under arrest.

Wilson allowed a consent search of her vehicle, where nothing was located. She was released from the scene.

All were advised that they were trespassing and to stay out of dumpsters on private property.

Erwin is being held in the Joplin Jail for his warrants.

Harkins is being held in the Jasper County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
All parties are innocent until proven otherwise by the courts.
