Activities planned this weekend for City of Joplin's birthday

(From the City of Joplin)

This Saturday, March 23rd, Joplin will turn 151. It's not as dramatic as last year’s Sesquicentennial, but birthdays are meant to be celebrated! Joplin was incorporated as a city by the state of Missouri on March 23, 1873.

Come celebrate Joplin’s 151st Birthday at the Joplin History & Mineral Museum from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 22. Free admission to the Museum is being offered, allowing patrons to enjoy some of the Museum’s new displays. Guests can also partake in birthday cupcakes and punch.

The Joplin Celebrations Commission marks this year’s birthday with a formal dedication of three new historical trail markers in Spiva Park in downtown Joplin at 10 AM on Saturday, March 23 . The public is invited.

These are the 5th, 6th, and 7th Heritage Trail markers to be placed, a project the Celebrations Commission hopes will grow to 20 in the next few years. The initial markers are along the trail between Landreth Park and 4th Street and were dedicated in 2022.

The new markers, all located in Spiva Park, tell the history of 4th and Main Street, which was the focal point of life in Joplin for many years. Learn more about the Spiva patriarchs for whom the park is named, as well as the Connor Hotel.

The Spiva Family and Visit Joplin funded the three new markers. The Joplin Celebrations Commission continues its work through the 2026 Route 66 Centennial and USA 250th.
