Empty Bowls event to fight food insecurity to be featured on Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

Empty Bowls is a fundraising concept that offers handcrafted ceramic bowls and soup to raise funds to fight hunger. Empty Bowls dates back to the 1990s. Missouri Southern State University is preparing to host its third Empty Bowls event April 3rd and organizers discuss its benefits and support for the Groceries to Graduate program on the upcoming Newsmakers.

Frank Pishkur, Chair of the MSSU Department of Art and Design discusses the event and the involvement of art students using clay to create hundreds of ceramic bowls for the fundraiser. He is joined by Fresh Ideas Chef Saul Paniagua who talks about soup as a source of nutrition and what soup he will prepare for the event.

Andrea Cullers, Co-Director of the Lion CO-OP and student volunteer Samantha White explain the need for the fundraiser and how the Groceries to Graduate program works. Alum Jared Carper talks about how the Groceries to Graduate program made a difference in his life and how he hopes to destigmatize getting free food and supplies.
