Today, the Joplin Police Department is proud to recognize and congratulate Corporal Joshua Hanes on his retirement and on reaching the milestone of twenty years of dedicated service to the citizens of Joplin.
Corporal Hanes' commitment to service began long before he put on a Joplin Police Department uniform. A 1996 graduate of East Newton High School, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. Stationed in Sigonella, Italy, he proudly served four years before being honorably discharged in 2000. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Missouri Southern State University, earning a degree in Criminal Justice in 2003 and laying out the foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement.
In 2004, Corporal Hanes began his law enforcement journey with the St. Petersburg, Florida Police Department. Two years later, in 2006, he returned to Southwest Missouri and joined the Joplin Police Department as a patrol officer.
From the very beginning, his dedication, professionalism, and leadership were evident, leading to a career marked by diverse assignments and extraordinary accomplishments.
Throughout his tenure with JPD, Corporal Hanes served in numerous specialized and leadership roles. He spent six years as a member of the department's S.W.A.T. Team, demonstrating courage and tactical expertise in high-risk situations. In 2008, he was selected to become a detective and was assigned to the Joplin Narcotics Unit, where his investigative skills contributed significantly to public safety efforts within the community.
Corporal Hanes also served as a K-9 handler for four years alongside his trusted partner, K-9 Scout. In 2015, he was promoted to Corporal and returned to the Patrol Division as a supervisor, where he mentored officers and helped guide daily operations. His leadership abilities continued to shine, and in 2019 he transitioned to Investigations Supervisor, overseeing the Joplin Special Investigation Unit. During this time, he supervised several critical areas within the Investigations Division, including the department's F.L.E.X. Team and Property Crimes Unit, where he played a vital role in numerous major investigations. In addition to his many departmental responsibilities, Corporal Hanes serves as an ATF Task Force Officer.
Corporal Hanes has earned the respect of his peers and the gratitude of the citizens he served. His dedication and performance were recognized through multiple Officer of the Month and Grand Cordon awards. He was also honored as Detective of the Year and Supervisor of the Year, reflecting both his investigative excellence and outstanding leadership. His commitment to protecting life was further recognized through numerous Life Saving Awards, as well as a prestigious Chief's Commendation Award.
For two decades, Corporal Joshua Hanes has exemplified the values of service, integrity, professionalism, and leadership. His career has left a lasting impact on the Joplin Police Department, his fellow officers, and the community he faithfully served.
On August 7, Corporal Hanes officially retired after 20 years of distinguished service. However, thanks to the citizens of Joplin approving Proposition B in 2019, we are pleased to announce that he returned the very next day to continue serving the City of Joplin in the same capacity.
