Winter weather advisory issued for Joplin area

WINTER WEATHER TO IMPACT SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS AND THE OZARKS
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY...

.THE FIRST WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON WILL AFFECT THE MISSOURI
OZARKS AND SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. PRECIPITATION
WILL LIKELY BEGIN AS A MIX OF SNOW...FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET OVER
SOUTHERN MISSOURI THURSDAY BEFORE CHANGING OVER TO ALL SNOW LATER
THURSDAY AFTERNOON INTO THURSDAY EVENING. AFTER A BRIEF LULL IN
ACTIVITY THURSDAY EVENING...ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW WILL MOVE ACROSS
THE REGION LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM ONE TO THREE
INCHES NORTH OF I-44...TO TWO TO FIVE INCHES ALONG THE I-44
CORRIDOR...WITH AMOUNTS BETWEEN FOUR AND SIX INCHES ACROSS FAR
SOUTHERN AND SOUTH CENTRAL MISSOURI. A SHARP GRADIENT IN
ACCUMULATION ALONG THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE SNOWFALL IS
EXPECTED...WHERE AMOUNTS COULD DIFFER SUBSTANTIALLY OVER A SMALL
AREA. IN ADDITION TO THE SNOW...A GLAZE TO TENTH OF AN INCH OF
FREEZING RAIN WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE OVER SOUTHERN MISSOURI.

WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING BELOW FREEZING IN MOST LOCATIONS
TONIGHT...PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY IMMEDIATELY ACCUMULATE ON AREA
ROADWAYS ONCE IT BEGINS THURSDAY. THIS WILL RESULT IN RAPID
IMPACTS TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE REGION.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SPRINGFIELD HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW...SLEET AND LIGHT AMOUNTS OF FREEZING
RAIN...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM THURSDAY TO 6 PM CST FRIDAY.

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...AREAS GENERALLY BETWEEN U.S. 60 AND
  U.S. HIGHWAY 54 FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE FRIDAY
  AFTERNOON.

* SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS...LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW AND
  SLEET ARE EXPECTED THURSDAY...ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON
  HOURS. MORE SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED LATE
  THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY AS ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW MOVES TROUGH
  THE REGION. STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM ONE
  TO FIVE INCHES...WITH HEAVIER AMOUNTS ALONG AND SOUTH OF
  INTERSTATE 44.

* ICE ACCUMULATIONS...UP TO A GLAZE OF FREEZING RAIN WILL BE
  POSSIBLE SOUTH OF I-44.

* IMPACTS...SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS TO TRAVEL ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE
  REGION THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING TO OR
  BELOW FREEZING IN MANY LOCATIONS BEFORE PRECIPITATION STARTS TO
  FALL...RAPID ACCUMULATIONS AND IMPACTS TO AREA ROADWAYS ARE
  EXPECTED ONCE PRECIPITATION FALLS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...
AND FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.
