MSSU ceramics students plan pottery sale

(From Southern News Service)

The MSSU Ceramics Department will host the 2013 Student Pottery Sale from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, and Friday, Dec. 6, on the first floor of Billingsly Student Center at Missouri Southern.

Hundreds of microwavable, oven- and dishwasher-safe pottery will be available as well as sculptural works, ranging from pieces created by beginners to professional-level creations.

“This exhibition and sale of pottery is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn and develop skills needed to make a living as an artist,” says Frank Pishkur, associate professor of art. “How to structure a sale, how to price work, how to set up, develop and present an exhibit are all necessary skills that take time and practice to master.

“At the same time, the sale is a good opportunity for students to recoup some of the material costs they expended during the semester creating the work as well as even help to pay for the cost of the class. In essence, every artwork that someone purchases from a student is a small scholarship to that student.”

A percentage of proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase tools and equipment for the ceramics program.
