General Tasks and Responsibilities:
While following tasks are necessary for this position, they are not an essential part of the duties of this position and may also be performed by other employees.
- Supervises the work of Dispatch staff to determine training needs and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all data input into either the local, state, or national computer database, identifies and corrects errors.
- Facilitates development of and implements operating policies and procedures to ensure effective communications system service delivery.
- Trains staff regarding new and revised policies, procedures, and techniques for public safety dispatch operations.
- Operates a dispatch work station as needed.
- Coordinates with computer programming staff to develop and revise programs to ensure the effective operation of the computerized records systems and generates required statistics and reports.
- Works with records staff to ensure accurate record entry and to resolve problems and questions regarding computerized records systems.
- Maintains familiarity with the full range of duties of staff as needed to ensure effective provision of dispatch services, maintains records and prepares reports.
- Works collaboratively with other public safety entities to determine what services the Communication Center can provide.
- Identifies and resolves problems regarding current services and identifies, develops, and implements procedures that will increase service effectiveness and efficiency.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Participates in preparation and monitoring of the Center’s budget
- Performs a variety of public relation duties; such as, representing the City in meetings with the media and officials from various public safety and emergency service agencies, organizations, and special interest groups, explains the services provided by the Public Safety Communications Center, and discusses more effective means of meeting the emergency communication needs of Joplin and surrounding area residents, and develops cooperative programs for emergency communications.

Physical Requirements

- Low levels of twisting and bending required; manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, FAX machines, calculators, telephones..
Environmental Adaptability

- Skill in managing projects applicable to improvements and upgrades of the Communications Center
- Skill in evaluating staff performance to determine if communications services meet established standards
General Qualifications:
Associate Degree in Office Management, Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Supervisory experience equivalent to three years full time emergency communications and dispatch work involving 800 MHz radio systems.
- Must be certified to operate the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully complete a thorough background check, and successfully complete a physical exam and drug test.
