(From the Joplin Police Department)
Attention Saturday drivers!
The Joplin Memorial Marathon will take place tomorrow morning. The route will span all over the city. The furthest points of travel are Murphy Blvd/Connecticut to the north and east, 38th to the south and Country Club Drive to the west. A map is attached. Please note that Joplin Ave will be closed from 7th to 20th all day with several other temporary road closures. Do not drive around or move cones and barricades. The fine for doing so is up to $500 and it will be enforced. These traffic control devices are detrimental to runner safety, and are in place for a reason.
Please plan your travel accordingly and expect delays and detours when traveling along the route. This race pays tribute those lost in the May 22nd tornado and is also a qualifying event for those wanting to run the Boston Marathon. Please watch for workers, runners, and spectators along the route and give them room to run. The event will start at 4:30 Saturday morning and be complete with roads back to normal around 1p.m. Zora and Interstate 44 will be the only major east/west roads not impacted and Range Line and Florida are the only major north/south roads not impacted.
We wish everyone a fun and safe race day. Special thanks to those that are setting things up today, specifically the Joplin Public Works Street Department who are working hard in the rain to make this an enjoyable event.
