(From the City of Joplin)
Weather permitting, Main Street between 26th Street and 29th Street will be closed starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10 through 1 a.m., Thursday, May 11. Following this closure, at least one lane of traffic each direction will be opened.
This closure is for the replacement of a storm water box at 27th & Main. Detour Routes will be in place, and drivers will need to use alternate routes. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in this area as workers will still be working in the area after the opening of one lane traffic.
This is part of the $7.47 million construction project that includes new street surface, sidewalks, and lighting improvements from 15th Street to just north of 32nd Street. Branco Enterprises, Inc. is the contractor for the project.
“The City is working to minimize traffic interruptions during this major project, and the contractor can close Main Street for a period of 18 hours,” said Public Works Director David Hertzberg. “After that, the street needs to reopen to allow vehicles traveling both directions to have at least one lane of traffic. These short-time closures can occur only five times for this project, so the contractor must be methodical and efficient in their work.”
Funding for this project is through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery program. Completion is anticipated for December 2017, except for specialized work in the intersections along Main: 26th, 20th and 15th. This work will be completed in Spring 2018 so the asphalt pavement can cure prior to placing a colorized terra cotta in the crosswalks as a method to alert drivers to pedestrians. City engineers noted that this is an effective way to call attention to the area, without a lot of added cost.
The City appreciates your patience while this work is being done.
