Joplin Public Library’s 2020 Summer Reading Program (“Imagine Your Story”) has begun! As we navigate summer reading almost entirely online, we are exploring ways to connect with summer reading participants to make this summer extra special!
JPL is excited to announce its first ever virtual series of summer reading performances! The Children’s Department will host three performers this summer. OMG Josh will return on Friday, June 12th at 2pm for a homemade magic workshop via Zoom!
Children in grades K-5, grab your capes and get ready to create your own magic show with props you already have around the house! Plus, OMG Josh will show you how to set the stage for your debut performance! Register by phone (417-623-7953) or email (childrens@joplinpubliclibrary.org) by June 10th to receive the Zoom meeting link.
Jay and Leslie’s Laughing Matters presents “Five Minutes of Fun: Preschool Edition” a five-week long video series for ages 3-6, Jay and Leslie start by demonstrating a piece of juggling equipment like bean bags, hats, or spinning plates. Next they invite kids to help solve a pattern mystery involving shapes, colors, letters, and other elements. The five videos will air weekly on Thursday mornings at 10 AM, beginning June 23rd.
Jim Cosgrove will help bring Summer Reading 2020 to a close with “Imagine Your Song: Musical Stories with Mr. Stinky Feet” via Zoom on Saturday, July 25th at 10 AM. Children ages 2-12 are invited to explore, imagine and tell stories through music, singing, and dancing during this virtual, interactive show that will get the whole family rockin’.
The Teen Department will host three virtual programs for middle school and high school students this summer. Registration is required for all programs. To register, email teen@joplinpubliclibrary.org or call the Teen Office at (417) 623-7953, ext. 1027.
Game Night will offer virtual board games and chess over Board Game Arena and Zoom on Thursday, June 18, 2020, from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm, for teens in grades 6-12. Participants will need to create a free account in Board Game Arena, https://en.boardgamearena.com/welcome and will need a device with web browsing capability, camera, and microphone. Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 17.
Teens ages 13-18 can create fantasy creatures and characters in the Sketch Along on Thursday, June 25, 2020, from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm over Zoom. Seth Wolfshorndl, Joplin High School Art Department Chair and sponsor of the JHS Cartoonist Club, will offer drawing tips and tricks as he and participants create art together. Participants will need sketching material--either paper and pencil or pen, or a digital drawing device. Participants also will need a device with web browsing capability, camera, and microphone. Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 24.
The Teen Department will host a Harry Potter Party on Thursday, July 16, from 2:00 pm-3:30 pm over Zoom for teens in grades 6-12. Special Guest Heather Van Otterloo, teacher at South Middle School, will join us for crafts, trivia, and fun. Costumes are welcome but not required. Participants will receive a supply packet for the program; supplies may be picked up at the library July 13-15. Participants will need a device with web browsing capability, camera, and microphone. Deadline to register is Wednesday, July 8.
The Adult Summer Reading program is excited to present three virtual events this summer. The first event will be a book club featuring debut author Phan Que Mai Nguyen’s The Mountains Sing. Participants may access this title through the JPL catalog or via Hoopla. The live book club discussion will take place virtually on Zoom on Wednesday, July 22, from 6:30-7:30 PM. The Zoom meeting link will be shared on Facebook and the JPL website prior to the meeting.
The Adult Summer Reading Program will also host two sessions of “Let’s Cook with Lisa,” a cooking tutorial series featuring JPL’s own Lisa Brown. The first cooking video will be posted on our Facebook page on Saturday, June 20th at 10 AM, and the second will be posted on Saturday, July 18th at 10 AM. Recipe lists for each video will be posted along with the tutorial.
Finally, we will host “Dungeons and Dragons 101,” a video tutorial with JPL’s own Arthur St. Onge featuring the basics of the popular role-playing game. The video will be posted on our Facebook page on Thursday, July 9th at 1 PM.
Finally, Post Art Library will host its 3rd annual Summer Reading Art Challenge online this year! To participate in the 2020 challenge, create an original work of art, such as a painting, poem, animation, song, dance, etc., based on the 2020 summer reading theme - Fairy Tales, Fantasy, and Mythology - and share your original work online using the hashtag #PALart2020.

This annual, all-ages art challenge is meant to encourage exploration of the arts by creating an artwork based on Missouri’s state-wide summer reading theme.
