A special exhibition of paintings by artist Jim Bray will be featured Monday, June 29, through Thursday, July 23, in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.
Bray, who served as head of Missouri Southern’s Art Department for 10 years, will offer an artist’s talk at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9.
A watercolor artist, he has established an international reputation with his paintings and collage works. He has also taught and exhibited in Japan and Scandinavia, and his works often reflect his international travels and experience. His works are also influenced by regular visits to the American Southwest, impressions from his childhood in Oklahoma and his interest in the “vanishing landscape” of rural America.
Bray, who is retired, taught courses in watercolor, life drawing, painting and typography He also taught Scandinavian art history as part of Missouri Southern’s Summer in Sweden program, which he helped create in 1992.
Prior to his work at MSSU, he served as chair of the Art Department at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and was previously employed as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Mo.
His work has won top honors and awards in national competitions, and a number of collages are featured in Gerald Brommer’s 1993 book “Collage Techniques.” His works are currently shown in Joplin as well as Nashville, Tenn., and Galleri VeBoa in Mullsjo, Sweden, as well as in many private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
