(From Southern News Service)Missouri Southern State University will observe Constitution Day with a special presentation on the role of elections in our constitutional system at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, in Phelps Theatre.
Dr. William Delehanty, associate professor of political science, will present “Popular Rule: Assessing What is Wrong with American Elections (and How to Fix Them).”
“The expression of public power is channeled through our elections,” said Delehanty. “I’ll be discussing how public power affects – or doesn’t affect – those who are chosen to lead us.”
Other topics during the presentation will include the importance of alternative choices on the ballot, how votes can be skewed by biased information, gerrymandering and the role of money.
Delehanty’s presentation will last between 30 and 45 minutes and will be followed by a question-and-answer session designed to engage the audience in a discussion.
Other activities planned for next week include events tied to the Japan Semester and the Missouri Southern-sponsored Third Thursday in downtown Joplin.
Monday, Sept. 13
“De/Tension/Past: Landscapes of American Incarceration”: Spiva Art Gallery. Photographer Emily Hanako Momohara’s photography exhibit captures reminders of the Japanese internment camps during World War II. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Admission is free and open to the public.
Tuesday, Sept. 14
“American Life in Postwar Japan: Making a Home for the U.S./Military During the Allied Occupation of Japan”: 11 a.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Dr. Annika Culver, an associate professor of East Asian History at Florida State University, will discuss how democracy and consumerism intersected in occupied space during the late ‘40s and ‘50s, and how contemporary cultural and social values were impacted following the war.
A Taste of Japan: 4:30 to 7 p.m., Mayes Student Life Center. The campus community is invited to experience a full Japanese meal provided by Fresh Ideas’ executive chef. The cost is $10 per person, plus tax.
“Tokyo Story”: 7 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. The Japanese Film Festival selection is an acclaimed 1953 movie about an aging couple’s journey to visit their grown grandchildren in bustling postwar Tokyo.
Wednesday, Sept. 15
Major/Minor Fair: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Billingsly Student Center. The event is designed to showcase the majors, minors and certificate programs offered at Missouri Southern.
Thursday, Sept. 16
Major/Minor Fair: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Billingsly Student Center.
“Networking 101”: Noon, Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom. Presented by Career Services, students and alumni can learn networking strategies and how to answer questions with confidence when communicating with professionals.
Third Thursday: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., downtown Joplin. The event will showcase the wide variety of educational opportunities at MSSU.
Friday, Sept. 17
An Introduction to Japanese Anime: 9 a.m., Corley Auditorium. Amber Stone, a 2002 graduate of MSSU, will examine the ways and whys of Japanese animation, including its history and relationship with/influence on American animation.
